Let's face it, traveling with kids is possible but it is not always easy. I am not the type of mom that will wait for the kids to grow up to have fun. Life is way too short, and the planet is too beautiful to miss it.
I took the time to plan my visit to the ice castle in Midway. I wanted to come up with ideas and tips to give you.
Ice Castle LLC, is a Utah-based company. They built five fantastic ice castles, four in the USA and one in Canada. This is my second time going and this time with a 9-month-old baby.
From the very moment you see the ice castle from a distance, you get excited. It looks like a massive painting against a dark sky and a full mom.
Being inside of an ice castle is such a unique experience. The light colors changing in the walls makes it looks magical. Each castle is a little over an acre, and it is all one piece of interconnected ice.
The blue of the ice is natural. They do not put anything to make it look blue. It is just like the ocean. The water absorbs every other color of the spectrum except blue.
The first thing to not forget even if it is so obvious is that it will be freezing cold. Hello, it is an ice castle! Don't be like me during my first visit. I went all dolled up and didn't pay attention to warm clothes. What do you think happened? I ended crying and frozen.
Dress Warm and Cute.
Put on thermal underwear. I suggest stretch fleece and long-sleeved. Legwarmers and gloves cannot be missed. Then, put on your pretty outfit to look cute in the pictures. I highly recommend boots to avoid falling and sliding.
I put on my children their warm pajamas and on top a shirt and pants. I knew they would fall asleep on our way back home. I only had to pull the shirt and pants off, and they were ready for bed.
Feed your kids and yourself in your way to the ice castle.
Depending on how far from your place the ice castle is ubicated you will find this tip necessary or not. The ice castle in Midway is an hour and a half away from my home. I didn’t want hungry kids crying and asking for food. While they sell hot chocolate and pantries inside the castles, you may want to have your kids fed. It also can be a little pricey and up a lot for big families. The ice castles are built in remote areas so it would take you awhile to find a restaurant.
Pee before getting in the castle!
The last thing you want is having to take your kids to pee when you have barely gotten in. I saw many moms doing it, and they sure weren’t happy about it.
Leave the stroller at home.
Pushing a stroller on ice and snow? What a bad idea. Don’t be like me and use a sled instead. There was basically two kind of parents at the castle. Those who were pushing and pulling a stroller and those wearing a baby carrier or using a sled. Who do you think had it easier to go through the ice castle? What were we thinking?
Even with a couple of layer of clothing, after being a while in the castle and sledding you or the kids may feel cold. Bring a warm blanket to cover up.Buy tickets beforehand.
Have them on your phone. Easy and faster to check in. Bring an external flash or a phone with a good camera and flash. Take a moment to warm up by the fire pits around the castle.
